Driving is always a good option, but there are alternatives........
Budget carriers Ryanair, Easyjet and Jet2 all fly to possible airports.
Turin - 1.25 hours transfer, Cuneo 1.5 hours, Milan - 3 hours, Nice - 4 hours, Marseille - 2 hours, Grenoble - 2 hours. Whilst Turin is the nearest (Ryanair or Easyjet) Nice is a good option in the winter as flights are cheap (not many think of going skiing via Nice !).
Briancon also has a main rail station - an overnight sleeper from Paris arriving 0830 or TGV via Vallence. The apartment is next to the lift and all the ammenities you need are within walking distance so you don't need a car.
You can get a train from Turin to Oulx then a bus to Briancon. There is bus from Grenoble but from the other airports it is probably best to hire a car.

If you are driving it is 600 miles from Calais (Autoroute for 540 miles). Follow signs for Lyon then Grenoble then Briancon. If it is snowing, an alternative route via the Frejus tunnel is recommended.
